The table of contents is an ordered listing of the chapters, sections and, sometimes, figures of your text, clearly identified by page number.

Readers should be able to look at the page of your table of contents and instantly understand how your paper is structured, allowing them to skip to any section or subsection that is important.

The table of contents is one of the most important aspects when applying the final touches to your dissertation. It lets the reader move through your claims and subject points (like a map).

It is easy to add a table of contents which can be quickly added after you have completed writing your document.
